Our Summer Intensive programs are eight-week courses, equivalent to one year of college-level Arabic. In 2010 we are offering Intermediate Intensive Arabic for students who have completed one year of Arabic study at PAR or another institution.
Beginner Summer Intensive is for students with no prior exposure to Standard Arabic, the
lingua franca of the Arab world. After finishing the eight-week course, students will be able to read, write, speak, and understand Arabic at an intermediate level. The Beginner Intensive program is taught by school founder and veteran Arabic teacher Jamal Mavrikios.
Intermediate Summer Intensive is for students who have completed the equivalent of one year of college-level Arabic. Students will greatly expand their understanding of Arabic verbs and greatly expand their vocabulary while approaching challenging readings. After finishing the eight-week course, students have greatly enhanced their listening and reading comprehension, and their comfort in producing the language in speech and writing. The Intermediate Intensive program is taught by instructor Maher Sabry.
Like all language classes at PAR, the Summer Intensive is taught largely in the target language, with time set aside for explanation of grammatical concepts in English. While many schools focus overwhelmingly on written Arabic, we strive to balance written and verbal skills, presenting Arabic as the living language it is. Class time involves plenty of speaking and drilling, and the 45 minutes each day of pure conversational practice ensure that students will feel competent using their Arabic in the real world.
The eight-week Beginner Intensive course covers all the material of our first year Standard Arabic curriculum (Arabic 1-6). You'll find an outline of these classes here. Students are required to spend time outside of class working with audio CDs and completing exercises in order to keep up with the rapid pace of this course.
The eight-week Intermediate Intensive course covers all the material of our second year Standard Arabic curriculum (Arabic 7-12). The course begins with a thorough treatment of Arabic verbs, along with real-life listening comprehension drills. After this initial "boot camp," the course will cover the first six units of Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya with DVDs: A Textbook for Arabic, Part Two, Second Edition (Part 2) .
Beginner and Intermediate Intensives meet simultaneously from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, from June 28 to August 20. After the first week, the class will adhere to the following schedule:
- 9:00-9:15 Review of the previous day’s new material
- 9:15-9:45 Homework and discussions
- 9:45-10:15 Arabic-only conversation drilling all material studied to date
- 10:15-10:30 (break)
- 10:30-12 Presentation of new grammar and vocabulary
- 12:00-12:30 Arabic-only conversation focusing on new material
Students who wish to continue their Arabic study at the end of summer have several options. Students with an interest in a specific region may also wish to enroll in a dialect course. We currently offer Moroccan, Tunisian, Egyptian, Levantine and Gulf dialects. These classes will be offered on weeknights.
We can also help students explore options for study abroad and other international opportunities, and will be happy to write letters of recommendation.
Tuition for either course is $1,800 before May 15, 2010, and $2,200 for students who register after that date. Tuition includes a $500 non-refundable deposit.
Registrants may secure their place in the class at any time by submitting the $500 deposit,
