Pacific Arabic Resources (PAR) accepts student registrations online, by telephone, by mail or in person. Registration requires a nonrefundable $85.00 tuition deposit*. Tuition may be paid by check, money order, credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or cash. The balance of tuition is due no later than the first class meeting. Students may enroll after the registration deadline, but many classes fill early and enrollment cannot be guaranteed after the deadline.
Note: The deposit applies to the specific
section of the class for which you have registered. Changing to a different
section will forfeit the deposit for the original section, with exceptions
for switching to a different class level (e.g. you registered for MSA 1 but, after the
first class meeting, you and the instructor determined that you should really be in MSA 2).
Students may take advantage of several opportunities to save on tuition costs, and may incur additional fees as outlined below.
Class registrations made one week or less before a Session begins will be subject to a $20 late registration fee. Class registrations made the week a Session begins will be charged a $30 late fee in addition to tuition.
Bounced checks are subject to a $20 handling fee.
Some classes require textbooks and audio CDs that are not included in the cost of tuition. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that he/she has the required materials by the time class starts. As of January 2006, the fees for these materials are between $40 and $60. When materials are included in the cost of tuition, these materials will be distributed at the first class meeting.
Full payment of tuition by the regular registration deadline entitles the student to a $10 discount on courses of fewer than ten weeks, or a $20 tuition discount on courses of ten weeks or more.
Students who choose to repeat a level may do so once for half the full tuition price. This offer is valid for one year following the first class meeting of the original class and may not be combined with any other discounts (including the $20 early registration discount). Students who register after the deadline, however, will be subject to late fees as always. Students wishing to repeat a course for the third time are required to submit full tuition.
Students have the opportunity to keep their tuition costs low by paying early. Here's an example of how tuition can vary based on the variables outlined above.
Let's say a student wishes to register for a $280 course. The student may pay anywhere from $260-$310, based on certain criteria.
- Student registers and pays in full by 5 p.m. on the registration deadline:
- Student pays $260 ($20 discount)
- Student pays nonrefundable $85 tuition deposit by 5 p.m. on the registration deadline:
- Student pays $280 (full tuition, with tuition balance due before the first class meeting)
- Student does not register until the week before the class begins:
- Student pays $300 ($20 late registration fee)
- Student does not register until the week class begins:
- Student pays $310 ($30 late registration fee)
See the Summer Intensive page for details about policies and discounts specific to our intensive programs.
"Introduction to Arabic" is for students with no previous exposure to the language. Students entering our school with some background in Arabic must have their level evaluated in order to be placed into the proper class.
Evaluation may be done by means of an interview or a class visit (see below). All placement is at the discretion of the academic director.
Prospective students are encouraged to visit a class to evaluate our instruction or to determine their level within our curriculum. Such visits are meant to aid students in determining their interest in future classes. Evaluation visits are not permitted during the first two meetings of any course. Please contact
us if you're interested in visiting a class.
An enrolled student may transfer to a different class if they and their instructor believe they are at an inappropriate level.
Students who do not take classes at Pacific Arabic Resources for two Sessions (five months or more) will be required to pass an examination before being allowed to register for their next level of study. Such students may repeat their last level of study without taking an exam.
Students are required to submit written notice to cancel registration. Email messages to registrar@pacificarabic.com are acceptable. In addition, students who are absent for three consecutive classes will be considered to have voluntarily cancelled their enrollment. We cannot consider requests for tuition refund / credit made after a course has ended.
Tuition (less the nonrefundable $85 tuition deposit) will be refunded if cancellation is submitted before the beginning of the second class meeting. After this point, but before the beginning of the fourth class meeting, students who withdraw from a class may request a credit for the value of the remaining class sessions (minus the nonrefundable $85 tuition deposit). This credit may be redeemed during the subsequent two Sessions (five months), or is forfeited. No refunds will be given if cancellation is submitted after the fourth class meeting.
Tuition (less the nonrefundable $85 tuition deposit) will be refunded if cancellation is submitted before the beginning of the second class meeting. No refunds will be given after this point.
Tuition (less the nonrefundable $85 tuition deposit) will be refunded if cancellation is submitted more than 24 hours before the first class meeting. No refunds will be given after this point.
Very rarely PAR must cancel a class due to circumstances beyond our control. If a class is cancelled by PAR at or before the second class meeting, students will receive a full refund. If the class is cancelled after the second class meeting, the student will receive a prorated refund.
Due to our obligations to our instructors and the small size of classes, missed classes cannot be reimbursed. Students wishing to make up material they have missed may schedule a private session with their teacher. The rate for private make-up sessions is $50 per hour.
Students who are absent for three consecutive classes will be considered to have voluntarily cancelled their enrollment.
While enrolled in a class at PAR, a student may attend other classes currently in session at their level or below for no additional fee. Students should speak with their teacher before attending other classes, since classes that are already full cannot accommodate visitors.
Very rarely PAR must cancel a lesson. A lesson may be canceled due to circumstances beyond our control, including teacher illness. If we must cancel a class, PAR will make every effort to contact all students immediately. Each student should provide a daytime phone number where he / she can be reached in such an event. We will also notify students via email if available. Cancelled lessons will be rescheduled.
Although grades are not given, all enrollment is at the discretion of the instructor. A student may be required to repeat a class if their instructor deems the student unready for the next level.
To ensure a supportive learning environment for all, PAR reserves the right to cancel the enrollment of any student who is deemed to engage in behavior disruptive to the education of others, including (but not limited to) verbal harassment and disrespectful behavior toward students, instructors or staff . In this case, a refund will be offered to the student, calculated as follows: prorated tuition for the number of weeks remaining, minus the nonrefundable $85 tuition deposit.
PAR maintains a reference library at our facility. Enrolled students may borrow up to three books for the duration of one Session. Students who do not return their books before the end of the Session will be charged $.50 per day each book is overdue.
Students who smoke may do so outside the building, at least ten feet from the entrance. Smoking is prohibited anywhere in the building.
Students are welcome to use our kitchenette, opposite the Cairo Room. There is always coffee, tea and water available to students, and occasionally we have snacks.
Students may also use our microwave. Food and drink is permitted in the classrooms, but we ask that students clean their area after class, and that students wash any cups, dishes or silverware they may have used.
Common courtesy requires that students turn off the ringers of their cell phones before class. If a student must make or receive a phone call during class, they are requested to leave the classroom.
The photocopy machine and phones at the facility are not for student use.
Pacific Arabic Resources does not discriminate against students, employees or contractors on the basis of age, ancestry, color, creed, disability, gender, marital status, medical condition, national origin, physical characteristics, race, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status.
We seek to enrich our enterprise through the engagement of diverse peoples, and promote a curriculum recognizing the contributions and achievements of our diverse global community. |
